100 Approved Supervisor Refresher Course
AAMFT Approved Supervisors must take a comprehensive 5-hour refresher course prior to the renewal of their designation. This institute is designed specifically to meet that requirement, and to keep practitioners up-to-date on clinical MFT supervision practice. This course will include case examples, didactic, and interactional instruction methods. It will focus on current resources available to supervisors, management of ethical and legal issues likely to arise during supervision, utilization of supervision contracts, cultural competence in supervision and therapy, and discussion of the current AAMFT Approved Supervisor requirements.
101 Solution Focused Therapy: A New Description about What Works

This institute will focus on the often overlooked, solution building conversation, rather than the common techniques of SFBT; (i.e., miracle question, scaling, exceptions, etc.) The presenters will show how SFBT clinicians can be culturally competent, integrate neurobiological theory, and debunk many SFBT critiques. The presenters will discuss the empirical research that supports the evidence-based status of SFBT.
102 The Use of Play Therapy in Family Therapy

This institute will provide participants the opportunity to learn and experience the advantages of family play therapy. It will include 20 techniques, discussion, group play opportunities, video, and lecture. Participants will explore a variety of simple and inexpensive approaches that integrate play therapy with family therapy.
103 Restoring Intimacy After An Affair: An Integrative Approach
This institute will present an integrative approach specific to treating affair couples. It is designed for clinicians already skilled in fundamental techniques of couple therapy, but wishing specific conceptual and clinical skills in working with this difficult population. This approach draws on theoretical and empirical literature regarding traumatic response and interpersonal forgiveness, and has been empirically supported in clinical research.
104 Therapy 2.0: Modernizing Service Delivery with Walk-in Therapy

It has been well established that clients’ readiness for change is highest at the time they make an initial appointment. This institute will assist participants in adding walk-in services to their practices to capitalize on this motivation. Participants will learn how to organize walk-in services in schools, agencies and private offices and conduct effective walk-in/single sessions.
105 Family Medicine and Family Therapy: A Necessary Unity

Family medicine is a natural home for family therapists because of the focus on “the individual in the context of his or her family and community, and all the complexities it entails.” Our presentation will describe the world of family medicine residency primary care programs and 5 successful programs that have integrated family therapists as providers and educators.
106 The Marriage Go Round: Helping Couples Heal
There are two basic cycles in relationships. One cycle is negative and damaging, the other is positive and healing. Attendees will learn how couples often end up in a conflict ridden, negative cycle and how they can get out of it. Be prepared to take a fun journey as you learn skills that are part of the positive cycle.
107 Spiritual Dimensions of Family Therapy
Spiritual, religious, and existential themes are an integral part of how our clients live, work, and construct relationships, and how we perform our work as therapists. They undergird human identity and activity in much the same way as culture, gender, and family-of-origin. This session will explore spiritual dimensions of family therapy and develop skills for using them ethically and effectively.
108 Joining the National Framework for Safe and Successful Schools

The Framework for Safe and Successful Schools is a multidisciplinary national proposal which advocates for collectively raising the standards of mental health services in U.S. schools. Developed in 2013 under the authorship of the National Association of School Psychologists, the proposal outlines several principles and best practices to boost student resiliency and achievement for at-risk students, which include universal mental health screening by multidisciplinary teams as well as the creation of multi-tiered systems of support for schools. This institute will first summarize the elements and recommendations from that proposal. The presenters will then introduce initiatives that illustrate how collaborative, multidisciplinary mental health teams in Connecticut are working with educators to build safe and successful schools. We will illustrate the roles school-based counselors, MFTs, school psychologists and social workers collaboratively play to build mental health teams of support across elementary, middle and high schools in urban, suburban and rural areas. We will address constraints and opportunities presented by the Framework, and will then focus on specific needs and interests of institute participants to encourage active multidisciplinary interest and participation in the initiative to enrich mental health services in education.
109 The Utilization of the Consensus Rorschach with Couples

The Consensus Rorschach (CR) is a projective technique for the assessment of couples that has been used to elicit and analyze communication styles, power and control dynamics, emotional processes, and interpersonal stress dynamics. This session will provide the history, training in the administration and interpretation of, and cutting edge research on the use of the Consensus Rorschach with couples.
110 Systemic Treatments of Self-functioning in Anxiety

Participants will learn how different aspects of anxiety are produced in the levels of self-functioning that develop as a child matures. Systemic interactions between these levels that contribute to anxiety disorders will be outlined and linked to the corresponding interpersonal interactions between parent and child. This knowledge will enable participants to more effectively help clients with anxiety problems.
111 Adolescents and Family Therapy: How Evidence-Based Treatment Can Enhance Clinical Work
Therapists often view evidence-based therapies with skepticism or trepidation. Some consider these approaches as irrelevant to real world clinical work. Addressing these issues head-on and in a practical way, this presentation describes a modular approach to understanding and using an evidence-based treatment. Using a new training video, the presentation illustrates the four core modules of multidimensional family therapy (MDFT), an evidence-based approach for adolescents. We cover the needed knowledge base, change theory, clinical methods, and desirable during-treatment processes within the adolescent, parent, family, and extrafamilial modules of MDFT.
112 Beyond Journals: Exploring Creativity in Supervision & Therapy
Beyond Journals will explore mixed media expression of self of therapist in training, supervision and therapy. Use of mixed media to express process offers voice to critical “self of person” elements for therapists and clients. Participants will explore concepts, case examples and benefits of applying creative expression in supervision and therapy. Attendees will create and share a mixed media project of their own to experience and evaluate the power of creative processes.
